First, take the Organizational Readiness Tool to confirm that your organization meets the eligibility requirements. (We are sorry, but individuals are not eligible to participate.) Next, be sure to register before Thursday, January 28, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Take some time to review all of the information provided here, particularly the application questions and scoring rubric. Sign up for our Q&A webinars on December 14 and January 7 to learn more. If you’re unable to attend the webinars, we will be posting recordings of them afterwards. You can always send questions to questions@racialequity2030.org.

Once you’ve completed your registration, you’ll be able to access the application form. Be sure to complete and submit your application no later than Thursday, March 11, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

How will the submissions be evaluated?

All applicants that meet the eligibility criteria for Racial Equity 2030 will receive feedback on their ideas, first from peer-to-peer review, and then, if they advance to the next round, from the expert review panel. In both phases, applications will be evaluated using a scoring rubric that outlines four criteria: game-changing, equitable, bold and actionable. Up to ten Finalists will be selected from the top-scoring submissions.

Why is the W.K. Kellogg Foundation uniquely suited to sponsor this challenge?

At the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, children are at the heart of all we do. But we know that children live in families and families live in communities. For children to thrive, their families need to be able to provide for them and their communities need to be equitable places of opportunity. Yet too many communities are not places of equitable opportunity.

For decades, the Kellogg Foundation has been committed to advancing racial equity and racial healing, community engagement and leadership in their work on behalf of children, families and communities. Racial equity funding first appeared in the foundation’s grantmaking in the 1940s. In the 1990s, it established an internal Diversity Advisory Committee. In the following years, the foundation intentionally focused on promoting diversity as an integrated priority in grantmaking. In 2007, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation formally  committed to being an anti-racist organization that promotes racial equity and racial healing.

Rooted in this history, and in honor of the foundation’s 90th anniversary, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation is launching Racial Equity 2030 to tackle the primary challenge of this time. This is the chance to chart a new course of action that will improve the lives of children and families across the globe.

"Racial Equity" has specific connotations within the U.S. What does it mean in a global context?

We believe a racially equitable society is one in which neither race nor ethnicity determines opportunity and life outcomes. It is a society where all groups have the ability to participate, prosper, and reach their full potential. Depending on local conditions, barriers to that vision may be rooted in perceived racial difference, and/or in oppression tied to ethnicity, caste or economic injustice.

While the term “racial equity” has specific connotations within the United States, in a global context, this challenge seeks to advance equity within hierarchies, structures, policies, systems and practices of dehumanization that perpetuate disparities for racial/ethnic groups in a local context.  Also, through the examination of historical impacts of colonialism in perpetuating structural racism, we can understand racism as a global issue and seek anti-racism strategies to decolonize systems through this challenge.
